Oscar Romero, Class of 1978
Educator/Coach
Oscar was born and raised in Tucson and graduated from THS in 1978. He received scholarships to play baseball at Pima College for the late Sports Hall of Fame coach, Rich Alday, and at the University of El Paso with coach Jim Lawlor. Oscar was a golf coach from 1983-2011 and baseball from 1983-2018. In his time as a baseball coach, he had 488 wins and was Coach of the Year four times. He was also the Hispanic Coach of the Year in 2013. His summer legion teams won nine state championships. Romero was also an All City and All State player while at Tucson High
It was evident that Oscar was as tough in the classroom as a teacher as he was a coach on the baseball field. He expected growth of the mind in class and improved skills on the field. Oscar taught a variety of sciences such as: Marine, Environmental, and Bilingual Biology, Methods of Science, Anatomy, Physiology, Body Conditioning, and Golf.
Mr. Romero has had an impact on thousands of young men throughout his years at Tucson High not only with baseball, but also always by instilling good character and respect for one another. Even in his classrooms, his message was clear that one day they would become adults in the real world and the discipline acquired from and that of the ball field were not different. Once they developed good habits with both, their lives would be a little easier.
His chosen profession was heartfelt as he was never in it for the money. Coaches in this era did it for the love of the students and the love of the game.
