Janet Calkins Bostwick, Class of 1976
Associate Presiding Judge, Pima County Juvenile Court
Janet Calkins Bostwick’s experiences as a Badger inspired her lifelong dedication to community, culture, and public service as an Arizona Superior Court judge.
A proud member of the Class of 1976, Janet was National Honor Society president and graduation speaker. She played in all the THS bands, orchestra, Regional/All-State ensembles, and was band President. Senior year she won top speech tournament points for the THS National Forensic League. She was on the yearbook staff, Girls State delegate, lettered in tennis, and received the Gwynne Barthels Pedersen Memorial achievement award. Most importantly, Janet shared these experiences and more with friends for life, still Badger-bonded today.
Janet attended UA on a music scholarship, continuing to perform. A work-study job at the Arizona Historical Society sparked her interest in Arizona history and a combined History/Music/English major. In law school she received the outstanding appellate advocate award, the trial advocacy award, and the Arizona Law Review Editor’s award. She earned her undergraduate and law degrees with distinction.
Janet was a partner in Tucson’s historic Molloy, Jones, & Donahue law firm, then opened her own practice as a new mom, emphasizing employment discrimination law. She consulted at the university on nondiscrimination and equity compliance and was an adjunct law school professor.
Janet is now Associated Presiding Judge of Pima County Juvenile Court, working to improve court processes and outcomes for children and families in child welfare and delinquency matters. As lead judge for Indian Child Welfare Act cases, she presents nationally and facilitates frequent trainings and collaboration between tribes and court professionals to advance the letter and spirit of the law and honor tribal culture. Janet is committed to education, including the critical school needs of children in care. She participates in an education leadership table, volunteers with student mock trial and moot court programs, and is a mentor resource for students interested in law.
Janet keeps enjoying music, playing in several community groups giving concerts throughout the year. One night a week she rehearses in Tucson High’s band room, which feels like home.
Janet is grateful to THS for the inspiration and opportunity.
